Pharaoh Hounds:  Phabulously beautiful, Phrisky, Phun, and downright smart!

There has actually been quite a bit written about Pharaoh Hounds, and we will in no way attempt to duplicate volumes of information here.  The following are some of the books that contain details about the breed from varying perspectives:

Bullard, R.A., Martin, J. (1984).  The Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Hound.  Frank Amato, Publisher.    This is out of print and has limited availability.

Durr, K. (1996).  Ancient Egyptian Names for Dogs.  Alpine Publications.

Sacks, R., Block, P. (1986).  Pharaoh Hound.  Denlingers Publishers Ltd.

Sefscik, S. (1997).  Pharaoh Hounds.  TFH Publications.

So you are perhaps thinking of acquiring a Pharaoh Hound?   A few remarks to introduce you to this wonderful breed.

Pharaoh Hounds are thought to be a very old breed of dog, with minimal changes over the years.  They are similar in appearance to the dogs associated with drawings on ancient Egyptian structures.  It is thought that the dog was, over the centuries, taken to areas throughout the Mediterranean, including the island of Malta, where the dog is still bred and used for hunting rabbits.  While one can assume that some changes in the breed have occurred during the past 2000 years, it is also general consensus among those who have researched this breed that the modern Pharaoh Hound is very similar to the hound of many years ago.

In the United States, Pharaoh Hounds are bred on a very limited basis, and usually the breedings are done by one of a group of committed breeders who are very familiar with the breed and with breeding practices.  The parent club, The Pharaoh Hound Club of America, offers educational and organization support to those interested in the breed, and helps to oversee the adherence to ethical practice among breeders.  It is often the case that applications for new pups are accepted and reviewed, and approvals granted, far in advance of a breeding, so that, once a litter of pups is born, the new owners are already determined, and the new home prepared.  Maintaining the integrity and health of this magnificent breed is important to Pharaoh Hound breeders and enthusiasts; therefore, breeding many litters is discouraged.  If an individual is interested in acquiring a Pharaoh Hound pup or adult, it is recommended that the person contact a reputable Pharaoh Hound breeder to discuss upcoming planned litters, the application process, guidelines and requirements for approval, pricing and terms, contract provisions, delivery options, etc.  That breeder can then work with the interested party in providing breed information and support, as well as answer what will inevitably be many questions relating to the acquisition.   Establishing a good relationship with a reputable Pharaoh Hound breeder is of critical importance, since the commitment to acquire a dog is a long and important one, and a knowledgeable breeder will be able to be a mentor and guide for the coming years.

It is highly recommended that, if you are interested in learning more about the breed, and the requirements for owning a pharaoh hound, you consult Kay Durr’s well-constructed and very informative web site, located at www.pharaoh-hound.com, where she discusses in more detail some of the issues that relate to Pharaoh Hound ownership.  The Pharaoh Hound, while wonderful, beautiful, and fun, is not a dog for everyone, for example, an issue such as containment (fencing, etc.) might prevent a person from being in a position to have a Pharaoh Hound.  Kay’s website will more thoroughly review some of these topics.
